ALTER [ALBERT] ROSENTHAL (AGE 14) WITH PARENTS (ABRAHAM AND SARAH), 4 SIBLINGS (LILLIE [LEAH], ROSIE, FANNIE [IDA], AND MORRIS), PROBABLY HIS NEPHEW HARRY, AND TWO BOARDERS - 1905 CENSUS - MANHATTAN
NOTES:
- This 1905 census form shows Albert Rosenthal, age 14, living on the Lower East Side with his parents Abraham and Sarah; two older and two younger siblings; probably his nephew Harry (Hersch); and two young women boarders.
- This shows that at some point since their arrival a few years earlier in 1902, the Rogall family must have changed their surname to Rosenthal. Why did they choose the name Rosenthal? Perhaps because it sounded like a German Jewish surname rather than a Polish Jewish surname? -- and might therefore seem more middle class? or be easier for people to spell? (Similarly, at the Tenement Museum in New York, one of the restored apartments is that of a Rogarshevsky family who changed their name to Rosenthal.)
UPDATE, June 2017: In a 2005 video, Irving [Harold's brother] recalled hearing that Abraham had a brother who had immigrated earlier and changed his name to Rosenthal, so Abraham decided to follow suit.

- Abraham's occupation is listed as Prop. restaurant [Prop. stands for "Proprietor"]; Sarah's as Housework; Lillie and Rosie as Tailor; Alter as School; the two women boarders as Tailor; Harry as School.
- Probably the 23-years old Lillie listed here is Leah.
- Probably the 8-year old Harry listed here is Harry Rosenthal (i.e. Leah's son; according to family stories, Leah was married in Poland at a young age, and her husband was abusive, so when Leah's parents emigrated they took Leah and her young son with them, and told immigration officials that their grandson was their son). The age is about right when compared to the Ellis Island record, where Hersch was listed as 5 (or when compared to Harry's 1917 draft registration which lists his date of birth as March 4, 1896). But in this 1905 census Harry is listed as a "boarder" and has a last name that was transcribed as "Eltauen" (or, it might be "Eltauer" or "Eltaurn"? I haven't found any other records for anyone with this last name (is it even a name? is the transcription correct?). Might this be a clue to the name of Harry's father (Leah's husband in Poland)?
- Morris's age is listed as "3m" (i.e., 3 months).
- Probably the one-year-old Fannie listed here in the 1905 census is Ida Rosenthal (the age is about right: Ida is listed as 6 years old in the 1910 census, 12 years old in the 1915 census, and 21 years old in the 1925 census).
- The street name (written sideways on the left) is hard to read; but the previous page in the census is about Delancey Street, and looking at the names of nearby streets in Google maps I see Cannon St., so I think the address is 48 Cannon St.? This address no longer exists, like much of Cannon Street. According to the web site Forgotten New York, "Cannon Street, now just an echo of its former self, exists as an alley between Delancey and Broome west of Lewis Street. It has survived because it faces a public school that was not razed in 'slum clearances' that began in the 1930s." See the remaining part of Cannon St. today in Google Maps.
